As our pianist plays the postlude at the conclusion of the Sunday service, we turn to greet old friends and welcome newcomers. We leave the sanctuary and walk downstairs to Barnum Hall, where beverages and snacks are placed around the room. The room is abuzz with people of all ages - parents holding babies, older children animatedly talking about what happened in their Sunday school circles, and adults sharing events of the week past. Newcomers are graciously welcomed and introduced to members of the congregation.
Potlucks are a great way for UUCM members and friends to share fellowship and great food. Typically there is at least one potluck each month between October and June. Potlucks alternate between Adult Potluck Dinners held on a weekend evening and Intergenerational Potluck Dinners held after the Sunday service.
Adult Potluck DinnersAdult members and friends gather on a Friday every other month for an evening of good food and fellowship, starting with hors d'oeuvres and adult beverages at 6pm. Some potlucks spotlight a certain cuisine or have a theme. During our spring dinner, we introduce and welcome those who became members during the year. Child care is provided and children have their dinner together.
Alternating with the Adult potlucks are the Intergenerational dinners where children of all ages are included at the table. This gives us an opportunity to share social time with our children as part of the larger community. These are held on Sunday immediately following the church service and are always well attended.
Another means of deepening our fellowship is by entertaining one another in our homes. Those who sign up for these suppers commit themselves to attending or hosting a small dinner party of 7-10 people.
We celebrate the annual Stewardship Campaign in the spring with a Fellowship Dinner on the evening before Stewardship Sunday. While this is a social event, the Stewardship committee takes this opportunity to introduce the new campaign and key dates, and to briefly review the pledging process.
