Martha Graham’s innovations basically transformed American dance. Her techniques are still being taught today. She said,
There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, nor how valuable it is, nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open.
You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work.
You have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that motivate YOU.
Keep the channel open.
What is the unique expression of this life force, this vitality moving through you? How can you put it into action to keep the channel open — flowing and growing? What kind of innovation might those gifts contribute through your actions?
This year’s Stewardship Program is an invitation to dream big about what’s possible at UUCM and to ground those dreams in the unique expression of your gifts: your time, your talent, and your money. Each of you has unique gifts to share that can strengthen the life force moving at the beating heart of this congregation. You can use those gifts, that energy, to realize your dreams. Together, you are a force to be reckoned with. Anything is possible.
I’m looking forward to hearing more about your dreams this month and how you’re going to make those dreams come true.
