A Stable Faith by Rev. Shayna Appel

What do ‘Black Lives Matter,’ Martin Luther King Sunday and Emma’s Revolution have in common?  They will all come together at UUCM on Sunday, January 17!

The folk duo known as Emma’s Revolution consists of songwriters and activists Pat Humphries and Sandy Opatow (a.k.a. ‘Sandy O’).  Their music was called “fervent and heartfelt” by the New York Times and they have been one of our ‘official’ UU folk groups for decades now.  Their songs have been sung for the Dali Lama, praised by Pete Seeger, and covered by Holly Near. They have performed at concerts, justice events and mass demonstrations across the country and around the world.

Emma’s Revolution continues to write songs that are tools of inspiration and motivation to fuel today’s resistance movements. Their video “So Impeachable”, a humorous and biting song parody of “Unforgettable”, was released the week of the July Mueller hearings and has been shared widely on social media. The duo debuted “Trumpty Dumpty (That’s An Emergency)” at the Day of Action opposing President Trump’s national emergency declaration. And their stunningly powerful song and video, “I Believe Her”, written in support of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, Dr. Anita Hill and all survivors, was called “the musical equivalent of breaking news” by KPFA Radio.

Emma’s Revolution are winners of the Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest and the first Phil Ochs Award. Their music has been featured on NPR’s All Things Considered and Pacifica’s Democracy Now. Emma’s Revolution were featured performers at the Parliament of the World’s Religions, performing to an audience of 10,000, and are contributors to the Grammy-nominated CDs, Singing Through the Hard Times – A Tribute to Utah Phillips and Seeds: The Songs of Pete Seeger Vol 3.

BUT WAIT…THERE’S MORE!

Following worship on the 17th, UUCM Members will be asked to vote on a Statement of Conscience opposing racism in all its forms, and on hanging a Black Lives Matters flag. This will be a Sunday to remember so I hope you will all come…and invite your friends!

Wishing and Hoping Us All a Happy 2021!
