UUCM is actively seeking candidates for the following positions:

Music Director

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Milford, NH seeks a part-time (15 hrs/wk, Sept. to June) Music Director to provide vision and leadership for our music program. We regard music as a vital part of our ministry.  Our Music Director will organize and direct the choir, select music for worship, play the piano and potentially other instruments.

At UUCM we love to sing and have a small, but enthusiastic choir which rehearses once a week and performs on some Sundays each month. Our major instruments are a Steinway grand piano and an historic Geo. S. Hutchings & Co. tracker organ. Both are in good condition. The sanctuary itself is dynamic acoustically and sound easily fills our English style chapel that dates from the 1870s. We regularly host concerts in this space.

There are several accomplished musicians in the congregation who add to the music possibilities and can work and plan with the Music Director for worship and performance. We also have a substantial music library of material for the choir.

Music is a vital part of who we are as a community, and we hope that our Music Director will feel a part of that. We value and celebrate diversity and inclusion. We are open to possibility, so if you have other skills you could bring to us that would enhance our music ministry, please apply and help us learn and grow.

Hours:  15 hours per week average, which includes the choir rehearsal and Sunday worship for three weeks per month, during the church year (September – June).

Compensation and benefits:

  • $32.50 per hour
  • One week off, including 1 Sunday service off per month
  • Payment may be negotiated for additional activities such as memorial services, weddings, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • The Music Director is expected to be familiar with classical, traditional and contemporary music and hymns congruent with Unitarian Universalism. We use both the Singing the Living Tradition and Singing the Journey hymnals as well as other music sources.
  • The candidate should have strong interpersonal skills and be able to draw upon a wide variety of musical abilities and tastes.
  • A degree in piano or music or comparable experience. Previous experience as a church musician is desirable.
  • Must be proficient on the piano and able to direct the choir. The ability to play the organ is highly desirable.
  • The ability to communicate by email, Zoom, and phone is expected.
  • Familiarity with Google Docs, Sheets and Calendar is preferred.
